John McEnroe continues to speak his mind…

…And boy does he have a way with words, but some players and league officials strongly disagree with what recently came out of his mouth this past Thursday.

Yesterday when promoting the upcoming 2010 US Open, John McEnroe stirred up a little “Hoopla” (…does this surprise you? icon cool John McEnroe Believes The WTA And Womens Tennis Should Take A Step Back ).

Everything was going status-quo until… John McEnroe decided to share his

opinion on where the WTA and its players should be heading in and what direction they should head in to improve the sport. Backwards was his answer.

He would like to see the WTA take its foot off the gas , and even throw things into reverse a little bit. Why? Because he simply believes that the way the events are planned and the number of tournaments on the women’s schedule is just too demanding on its players – both on their bodies and on their minds as well.

In a press Conference on Thursday, he was quoted as saying, “I don’t want to push women to play more than they’re  capable of.”  “Women have it better than any other sport, but you shouldn’t push them to play more than they’re capable of playing.”

“You’re asking too much of the women.” “They should be required to be in less events, there should be less events, there should be less events for the women.  It seems it takes an actual meltdown  on the court or women quitting the game altogether before they realize there’s a need to change the schedule.”

Yeah, that’s when the eyebrows raised and the pens dropped. Now, in forming this opinion, it might be fair to say John McEnroe was indirectly citing the 2 horrible mental collapses suffered by Zvonareva (1) at the 2009 U.S Open and (2) in doubles play at Wimbledon. …Or maybe the horrible outburst by Serena, where she was fined for lashing out at a line judge.  Too much pressure, you think?

Now though I believe the comment by John McEnroe was meant with the utmost respect, from the heart (…and sincere), but since the statement was such a bold one, 3 others weren’t particularly fond of them and thought it was important to voice their reply to Mac’s words.

This is what they said…

3 Leading Ladies Who Strongly Disagree With John McEnroe

1. Michael Joyce, a former player and coach, avoided speculation and offered some concrete evidence to disprove Mac’s claims and to show that all players are feeling the affects, not just the women.

She addressed the fact that last year’s champ, Juan Martin Del Potro was forced to withdraw from this year’s US Open, because of A wrist problem along with the reigning #1 ranked player on the men’s side Rafael Nadal and the game debilitating injuries he sustained back in 2009.

2. Stacey Allaster, current president of the Women’s Tennis Association, also wanted a piece of McEnroe, and she also pointed to the facts.

She reminded everyone that Serena Williams isn’t playing this year’s tournament because of anything tennis or tour relate and that Maria Sharapova has done an incredible job keeping her body in tip top shape despite the injury.

3. Mary Carillo, veteran tennis analyst, also chimed in with, “Monica Seles was as mentally tough as anyone I’ve ever seen — man or woman,” Carillo said on the call. “Steffi Graf. Chrissy [Evert] and Martina [Navratilova] . . .

They stayed so fit mentally and physically for so long because they wanted it for so long. To say we’re asking too much of women, I don’t see it.”

These ladies feel pretty strongly about this and they should. The core of what was being said gave the implication that our women players have limits and can’t do as much or dig as deep as their counterparts.

Basically, they’re weaker.  And all we ever talk about in tennis is going all out, giving your 100%, and becoming the strongest player (mentally and physically) as possible.

Now, all of a sudden, there is a cap on that fearlessness, that drive and determination, and the ability to perform. It’s pretty powerful stuff. And when coming from one of the sport’s best, it can be quite impressionable.

I mean hey, and if the youngsters hear this, it might kill their competitive fire altogether and discourage them from even pursuing the sport all.

Now let me tell you, if I were a woman, that very well might light a fire under me icon wink John McEnroe Believes The WTA And Womens Tennis Should Take A Step Back .  This is probably not the last we’ll hear of this.

…But hey, what do you guys think? Is John McEnroe right? Is there any truth to this at all? Or is John McEnroe just bonkers?
