TMC – Tennis organization experiences legal woes. Former Fed Cup captain Zina Garrison, has decided to sue the USTA, alleging that there have been discriminatory acts against her because of her race.

In the lawsuit filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court, Zina says proclaims the racial attacks hit her deep and where it counted most, in her pocket.

These money matters include being given a much lower salary than one of her peer and fellow Davis Cup coach, Patrick McEnroe, and she was also denied a multi-year deal as did McEnroe.

And the last straw in Garrison’s eyes was when Mary Joe Fernandez, he replacement, was also contarcted at a higher salary despite having much less national coaching experience than herself.

Garrison became the first African-American leader of the U.S. Fed Cup team when she replaced the great Billie Jean King back in 2004 and was not asked to return even though she has .500 record over five seasons, losing in the semifinals four times and the quarterfinals once.

“The USTA takes all allegations of discrimination seriously and takes pride in its numerous diversity initiatives and achievements,” stated USTA representative, Chris Widmaier said. “The USTA elected not to renew Ms. Garrison’s Fed Cup captaincy based on her performance, and strongly denies any allegation of discrimination asserted by Ms. Garrison.

“During Ms. Garrison’s five-year tenure as captain, the United States Fed Cup team did not advance to the Fed Cup final, it’s longest drought in the competition’s 45-year history.”

Garrison has done her fair share of winning and has brought excitement to the sport for years by holding one of the top 10 spots in the WTA for 7 straight years, by playing on the fed cup teams for a full decade, and peaking at #4 ranked woman on earth.
